The move follows an announcement made by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Friday, Feb. 28, which highlighted that the recalled electric vehicles fail to display some gear positions.
This oversight poses a significant safety risk, as it could result in the cars rolling away if the parking brake is not engaged.
The recall specifically impacts fully electric Volkswagen 2021-2023 ID.4, and 2022-2023 Audi Q4 e-Tron, and Q4 e-Tron Sportback vehicles, the NHTSA said.
A safety recall report attributes the problem with the gear indicator to a software issue. The company became aware of this issue in August, following five reported cases outside the United States.
This recall is not the first for the German carmaker this year. Earlier, Volkswagen issued another recall affecting approximately 30,000 vehicles in the US due to a malfunction with the rearview camera, which failed to display properly. That earlier recall primarily affected the Audi Q3, as well as some Volkswagen Tiguan and Arteon models.
Volkswagen is urging owners of the affected vehicles to ensure that their parking brakes are fully engaged to mitigate any potential risks until they can bring their cars in for service. Consumers can contact their local dealerships for more information regarding the recall and next steps.
Recall information is available for all vehicles at this link from the NHTSA.
